For those who want to enjoy the vibrancy of living downtown without having to live in a condominium, Laurel Park offers a diverse array of beautiful houses, ranging from vintage bungalows to modern townhomes. A few new condominium developments have emerged over the last few years as the heart of Laurel Park is in its diversity, but the single-family houses are what the neighborhood is most known for. Located between Orange Avenue and US 301, this fifty acre parcel of paradise is situated south of Ringling Boulevard and north of Mound Street, giving residents easy access to downtown, allowing them to walk or bicycle to all that Downtown Sarasota has to offer, including the wonderful selection of gourmet restaurants and shops, the growing number of professional theaters, and the hugely popular Downtown Sarasota Farmer’s Market.
In the northeast corner, the Towles Court Artists Colony seems to set the vibe for the rest of Laurel Park. Created in a cluster of restored, vintage Florida homes, these few blocks are home to a number of art studios, restaurants, cafes, shops, and galleries under a beautiful canopy of old-growth oak and pine trees that spreads throughout the rest of the neighborhood. Once a month, Towles Court opens up for a Friday night Art Walk, offering visitors the opportunity to weave through the winding paths and visit the studios and galleries during extended evening hours.
The creative essence of Towles Court seems to flourish throughout the neighborhood along with the canopy of trees. The diversity of homes, including 20th Century Mission, Colonial, and Mediterranean styles along with the more contemporary additions, is matched only by the regular selection of bold colors that accentuate so many of the Laurel Park residences, which lends to the community’s personality. This creative architecture and design is enhanced by the lush foliage and beautiful tropical landscaping under the grand oak branches and swaying Spanish moss that help give the community a comfort and tranquility.
While it is only a few blocks away from Payne Park, along with its playground, skate park, tennis courts, and other amenities, Laurel Park also has a small park where small children regularly enjoy the playground and the whole neighborhood meets for potluck celebrations a few times a year. There is also a kayak launch at the south of the neighborhood, giving residents easy access to Hudson Bayou, Sarasota Bay, and beyond.
Now on the National Register of Historic Places, Laurel Park was established as a neighborhood in the 1920s. Along with the collection of restored vintage homes, many of the streets are still paved with the original bricks. For urban living with a village feel, Laurel Park may have just what you’re looking for.
